2025-26 BAM Block of the Month

This Block of the Month is intended to be a fun way to come together monthly on an individual quilt top project. While we will be making the same blocks each month, participants will have the opportunity to decide on sizes and number of blocks to make.  We’ll all make the same blocks but end up with unique quilt tops. For some, the block patterns will be ones that you have made before; for others, they may be first time makes (in which case it is a chance to learn and get help from others when needed). You will end up with a unique quilt-top that can be kept, donated, or gifted!

General guidelines:

We are estimating total fabric needed at ~3 yards to make the blocks (assuming one block a month and you make all 12 blocks). If you choose to have sashing and/or borders, you will need more yardage. Backing is not included in our estimates

Quilts can have a defined palette or be made scrappy from your stash.  Fat quarter bundles can work; jelly rolls will not.

We encourage you to keep up with the month to month block making but understand things can get in the way.  If you fall behind … don’t give up!! You can always catch up as you’re only shooting for one block each month.

  • There will be prizes!  At the end of the BOM there will be a drawing for a meaningful prize (TBD but will announce as soon as we have it locked down). Each month you complete a block, you will receive two “raffle tickets” towards the end (not sure what this means: towards earning the prize?) of the BOM prize.  (If you choose to make more than one block in any month you’ll still only get credit for one.)

  • Those that complete their quilt top on schedule will also receive an additional 5 tickets toward the prize.

  • The drawing will happen at the guild meeting where finished quilt tops are shown.

Introduction/how this will work

  • Starting next month, a block pattern will be announced. We will show some completed blocks from this pattern (generally both precision pieced and improv).

  • “12 inch blocks are a very common size, and for good reason. They’re divisible by 2, 3, 4 and 6, which makes them incredibly versatile…” – The Quilt Block Cookbook by Amy Gibson, pg.11.

  • A pattern with cutting and yardage requirements for the block will be posted on the forum each month. We may provide patterns for different sizes. This is where you choose your own adventure. Pick the size from our patterns or choose a different size.

  • Participants have until the next meeting to complete the block. Those that show their block at the next meeting (or post a picture of the finished block on the forum before the next meeting) will be provided with two raffle tickets towards an exciting prize drawing at the end of the BOM. Occasionally there might even be monthly prizes for participants.

  • If you fall behind … you can catch up. For any block that is submitted after its monthly deadline, the participant will receive one raffle ticket towards the final prize drawing.

  • Block patterns will be for 12 x 12 inch finished blocks (so 12.5 x 12.5” unfinished). You can choose to make other sizes but for sanity-sake you will want multiples of 12. That said, you can go very improv and figure out how to puzzle together in the end … which can be very fun.

  • General schedule:

    • 12 (10?) months of block making (TBD but something like August 2025 through August 2026)

    • Layout gathering (date TBD; will be a Saturday special session)

    • Drawing for participant prize(s) DATE TBD
